Stage-Dependent Behavioral Modification in Non-Human Subjects Under Modified Conditioning Protocol W-1

ABSTRACT
Operant and classical conditioning paradigms are well established for reducing stress reactivity and increasing behavioral predictability in captive non-human subjects, typically through repeated controlled exposure paired with reinforcement (Pavlov; Skinner). Protocol W-1, adapted from an existing internal behavioral-compliance framework originally developed for human subject populations, was modified for non-human physiology and deployed across three conditioning stages. Stage 1 (memory dissolution analog) and early Stage 2 (emotional amplification analog) produced expected suppression of native defensive and territorial behavior consistent with standard habituation curves. However, subjects entering later Stage 2 exhibit a consistent, unexplained divergence from the suppression model, characterized by increased response latency, directed visual tracking of observers, and problem-solving behavior inconsistent with baseline cognitive models for the source taxa. This report documents the divergence and recommends a full review before Stage 3 (compliance induction analog) is authorized on any additional subject.

1. Background

Standard conditioning theory predicts that repeated, non-harmful exposure to a controlled stimulus under monitored conditions produces habituation — a measurable decline in stress hormone output (cortisol/corticosterone) and defensive behavior over successive trials. Protocol W-1 was not originally designed for this population; it was adapted from a three-stage compliance framework developed and validated for human subjects under a related internal program, with dosage and delivery mechanism modified for non-human physiology. Division 02 anticipated a conservative version of the expected human outcome: suppressed reactivity, increased compliance, reduced unpredictability.

2. Methods

Subjects (n=9, designated OGT-01 through OGT-09) received staged W-1 exposure via standard delivery per facility protocol. Behavioral response was logged by handler observation and camera review across three metrics: response latency, directed gaze duration toward handlers, and deviation from expected reactive/defensive baseline. Logs were reviewed weekly by Division 02 staff and cross-referenced against Division 01 genomic regulatory findings (see OGT-P-014).

*"Anticipatory behavior" per handler log terminology: subject positioning or stillness preceding a routine event (feeding, shift change, enclosure access) with no external cue present.

By late Stage 2, handler logs across seven of nine subjects independently used near-identical language to describe the divergence, most commonly variations of "waiting" or "watching," despite handlers working in isolation without shared reporting templates. Suppression of native defensive behavior proceeded as predicted. The emergence of directed, sustained gaze behavior and anticipatory positioning was not predicted by any conditioning model reviewed prior to program start, and does not resemble documented behavior in the source taxa's closest extant phylogenetic relatives.

Reyes, Site Operations): Independent incident reporting from Site Operations described specimen behavior during the 02/14/1998 containment event in terms consistent with the "anticipatory behavior" metric above, specifically noting subjects did not react with panic or disorientation at the point of containment failure. 4. Discussion

Division 02's working hypothesis is that Protocol W-1, designed to reshape compliance-relevant cognition in a human template, does not simply suppress non-human cognition when applied off-template — it appears to reshape it along dimensions the protocol was never designed to address.
